GENERAL
You will fall in love with the beautiful arctic wilderness of Finnish Lapland. Finland is the greenest country in Europe in terms of fir trees and fells. It also has the cleanest air in Europe.
Akaslompolo is a small village sitting by the Yllas fell. Here is a magical place where dreams come true for big and small, young and the slightly not so young. There is something for everyone. Set above the Arctic Circle, the Yllas fell (718 metres high) is where the Finnish go to ski. 62 slopes (53km), and 30 lifts. Purported to be the best skiing in Finland, and great fell walking in summer, you too can enjoy a vast amount of winter and summer activities unrivalled by any other destination. The scenery is breathtaking at any time of the year. A true winter image of ‘Narnia’.
The village of Akaslompolo is small, peaceful and tranquil, with very friendly residents. A warm welcome awaits you. There is no language barrier as most locals speak good English. There is a very calm and serene atmosphere. There is a well stocked supermarket (easy to self cater), a sports shop, an art gallery, a post office, gift shops, great restaurants, and snowmobiles for younger children at the Lapp Village. There is a spa treatment centre, swimming pools at the local hotels, and even a medical surgery should you require a doctor during your stay. All of these amenities are within a 15 minute walk. And guess who also has a house in the Village, yes, the big man himself. So if you’ve come in search of Father Christmas you’ve come to the right place. Look out for Rudolph and his friends, who can be seen roaming through the village.
The food is great - try local dishes and drink the local non-alcoholic drink of cloudberry juice. If you wish for a local alcoholic drink - try pear cider. Its all good. The hot chocolate is fabulous too around an open fire.
